Ella Langley: Country’s Fearless New Voice tells the story of the Alabama singer and songwriter whose rise to country stardom was years in the making. Born Elizabeth Camille Langley on May 3, 1999, Ella grew up on a farm in Hope Hull, Alabama, outside Montgomery. Long before Nashville knew her name, music was already part of her family life. Her grandfather played instruments and welcomed neighbors for informal music nights. After his death, Ella inherited his guitar and taught herself to play by ear. Her first full song on that guitar was Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds,” a revealing choice for a young musician whose influences would never fit neatly inside one genre. At home, Merle Haggard shared the stereo with Pearl Jam and the Grateful Dead. That unusual musical education helped shape the rootsy, gritty, genre crossing sound that would eventually become her signature. Rather than choosing between traditional country and rock, Ella absorbed both. In 2019, she moved to Nashville with no record deal and no guarantee of success. What followed was the part of the story that overnight success narratives often leave out: years of songwriting, collaboration, relationship building, and persistence. Before becoming a major recording artist herself, she wrote songs for other performers, including Elle King, developing a craft that would later become central to her own catalog. Her independent 2023 EP, Excuse the Mess, introduced audiences to an artist who was not interested in sanding down her personality for commercial convenience. Songs such as “Country Boy’s Dream Girl” and “That’s Why We Fight,” featuring Koe Wetzel, showed the influence of country, Southern rock, and outlaw traditions. Her collaboration with Tanner Usrey on “Beautiful Lies” further revealed her natural ability to share the spotlight. That same year brought another milestone: her Grand Ole Opry debut. She appeared on the historic stage before the major commercial breakthrough that would soon change everything. A deal with Columbia Records and Sony Music Nashville followed, giving the songwriter who had already built a foundation the resources to reach a much larger audience. Then came 2024 and “You Look Like You Love Me,” her breakthrough duet with Riley Green. The song became a platinum hit and reached number one, bringing Ella into the national spotlight and helping establish her as far more than a promising newcomer.
