This is a story of lost innocence. Believe me, I know how pretentious that sounds. And it is pretentious. I don’t deny it. I can’t deny it. It’s pretentious to believe that anything can chronicle the loss of anything as profound as innocence. It’s debatable whether innocence actually ever really exists and certainly I’m uncertain whether or not innocence is ever really lost in such an instant, brutal manner. I think it’s more likely that it would be eroded over the years by disappointment and failure. But my mam always said I was a pessimist.
She’s probably right. My mam’s always right about things like that. Still, she was the world’s greatest pessimist herself.
