This exhibition catalog showcases the work of conceptual painter and installation artist Melissa Furness. The book is a mid career survey of creative work which explores human nature and struggle as it manifests itself in relation to contemporary society and the remains of the past. This beautifully designed 107 page hardcover book offers a deeper understanding of the development of Furness' creative practice. Conceptual artist and painter Melissa Furness explores how we live amongst the ruins of history and the way that an often misperceived past has become embedded in our ever-changing present. Drawing from experiences of place and site, and of the tradition of painting and narrative, the artist treats painting as a conceptual object. Furness examines distortions of history, questioning what is revered versus what is discarded and forgotten. Her work highlights both narratives shaped by power structures and the individual—what is presented as truth versus the realities of personal and local histories. Amongst all of this is a depiction of struggle affected by history as expressed in ways that are responsive to the human experience.
