The Captured Mind is a comprehensive examination of how our core beliefs about life are formed and become our personal ideology. It also explains how this can be a force for both good and evil in how we go about out lives. It also provides practical guidance into deepening awareness as well as strategies for positive change in order to grow beyond the beliefs that no longer lead to goodness, At its core, The Captured Mind is a call to the reader to make time and effort to understand the ideological influences that are defining and guiding his/her life. It also proposes that as human beings, we all need to develop a personal ideology in order to make it through this adventure called living. Therefore, we can face the challenge laid down here, which is to choose and take ownership of an ideology that will not lead to moral failure. The three central pillars, the need for the sacred, the need to belong, and the need for purpose in life, can all be undertaken without compromising one’s moral selfhood. In that regard, it may be time to let go old creeds and commitments that guide you to dehumanise, mistreat or persecute others. It may be time to commit yourself to life- enhancing and compassionate commitment to your neighbour, in the Christian sense of neighbour, that is, those who inhabit the planet with us. It may mean recognising that compassionate care for the ‘other’ also demands compassionate respect for self, and sometimes hard choices that go with that. And finally, and perhaps most importantly, the journey to ideological certainty is not for us humans. We are not equipped for that trip. If we think we have reached that destination, it is because we have stopped travelling.
