In the archives of a university library, Claire, a historian of science, comes across the forgotten notebooks of an eighteenth-century alchemist named Maillard. One line, scrawled in the margin, stops her cold: “It breathes, it sings, it writes… I am nothing now but the space through which it passes.” It is the last line he ever wrote, in 1782. After that, nothing. What begins as an academic investigation — authenticating a manuscript, interpreting an engraved symbol, a trident topped with a serpent — soon draws Claire and her mismatched team (a chemist, a physicist, a biologist, a dancer, a photographer, a poet) far beyond the archives. Toward a question no scientific protocol had planned to ask: what if what Maillard stopped naming was not merely a historical riddle, but an experience that others, elsewhere, without knowing one another, are still going through today? Around this investigation unfolds a gallery of thirteen lives that seem to have nothing in common. A dancer whose hands, one day, stop trying to follow and simply follow. A painter for whom the canvas, one evening, carries on without him. A poet whose words write themselves, truer than any he would have chosen. A surgeon whose hands know, in the moment, what her mind has not had time to think. An actor who, once, stops acting altogether. An exhausted woman who, at her hospitalized mother's bedside, finds a clarity she thought she had lost. Thirteen moments, thirteen separate lives — and yet, beneath them all, the same quiet structure running through each: the fleeting loss of the feeling of being the author of one's own gesture. Intervallo moves along two threads that gradually meet: Claire's methodical investigation, rigorous to the point of obsession — and the experience itself, irreducible, which neither a dead alchemist's notebooks nor any cross-referenced data can fully capture. A novel about the space between intention and gesture, between measurement and what it measures, between the word and the thing it names — that tiny interval most of us cross without ever noticing.
