Dead Souls

Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol. Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol (Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol) was born on March 31, 1809 in present-day Ukraine, the Russian Cossack town of Sorochyntsi. Nicholas' parents are relatively wealthy; his mother's family is a Polish landlord, and his father writes poems in Ukrainian and Russian, and is a descendant of Ukrainian Cossacks. Nicholas was well educated and started writing as a teenager, although he considered becoming an actor because of his amazing talent for imitation. After leaving school, he went to St. Petersburg, but found it difficult for him to find work, whether he was a civil servant or an actor. He himself published a romantic poem, but was so criticized that he promised not to write poems again and considered immigrating to the United States. Fortunately, he insisted on writing and creating a series of stories about his hometown in Ukraine in a sociable and whimsical style, which attracted many literary admirers, including the respected poet Pushkin. Nicholas was finally able to give up his work and education and produce powerful books that brilliantly and brutally satirized the inequality of the Russian system and its corrupt bureaucracy. His creative talent diminished in his later years, he was deeply influenced by the sadistic fanatical priest, and on March 4, 1852, he went half mad. He is still the father of Russian realism, and his classic "Dead Soul" proves it
