One man taught himself skills and rode the tide of reform and opening-up to become a business owner in the construction industry. Another illegally crossed the border to Hong Kong, worked in the catering business, and later married into a wealthy family to become a restaurant owner; after reform and opening-up, he invested in the mainland and achieved even greater success. The third man, from a politically favorable family background, completed university education, underwent re-education in a factory after the Cultural Revolution, and returned to teach at his alma mater following reform and opening-up.Through the work and lives of these three ordinary individuals, the book reflects the earth-shaking changes that China has undergone from the founding of the People’s Republic to more than three decades after the launch of reform and opening-up.
