Stan Grabowski legally carries a concealed weapon. While he is in a small Nevada market an armed robbery occurs. The other customers are Kim, a teenage girl; Earl, an ex-convict; and Leah, a woman in her 40s. Robber Darrell Teagues is wired on drugs. He shoots Flora the checker four times. Stan kills Teagues. Flora survives. Ober Tyus is a DA with ambitions. A computerized re-enactment of the scene from the store's security camera can isolate only one moment: Teagues said, "I got rights." Tyus wants to be governor. Stan is arrested. During the trial we see just how many rights the criminal has as opposed to the victim. As the story races to an explosive and dramatic conclusion the reader will face major moral questions.
