In 1972 Auburn completed an unbelievable 4th quarter comeback to derail archrival Alabama’s quest for a national championship. The Tiger fans responded with a euphoric onslaught of jokes, memorabilia, and the now famous slogan, Punt Bama Punt. The Crimson Tide’s legendary coach, Paul “Bear” Bryant was not amused. What followed was a barrage of success that would see Bama produce seven SEC titles, three national championships, break countless records, and outscore Auburn 287 – 104 en route to winning nine in a row against the Tigers. Only the efforts of an energetic and brazen young coach and the emergence of a phenomenal athlete could ebb the Tide. The streak would see a host of heroes both memorable and forgotten take the field for the two football powers. During this period names like Richard Todd, James Brooks, Dwight Stevenson, William Andrews, Ozzie Newsome, Joe Cribbs, Jeremiah Castille, and Bo Jackson would all leave their indelible marks on the rivalry known as The Iron Bowl.
