Jeremy Duke's appointment as the head master of a newly built comprehensive school in the North East of England sets the cat among the pigeons. His former ally on the selection board becomes an implacable enemy as Jeremy’s new-fangled ideas set him on a collision course with the forces of reaction. Will this idealistic teacher manage to carry out his reforms to create a brave new world for his students? Or will the conspiracy of town councillors, members of the parent/teacher association, the local vicar, his jealous predecessor and the officer in charge of the school’s combined cadet force succeed in bringing him down?
