David J. Carr was born in Enfield and raised in East Kent from the age of five. A former Chatham House Grammar School pupil (1967–1973), he began his career as a radiographer before moving through pharmaceutical research, electronics procurement, and the design and manufacture of domestic electrical appliances. He later became Head of User Technology in Higher Education, retiring in 2012. Community has always been central to David’s life. He has served as Chairman of Eastry Parish Council and as a Member of Ramsgate Town Council, and is Hon. Secretary of the Old Ruymians’ Club. His first book, The Chatham House Story, now in its third edition, reflects his long-standing passion for local history and the heritage of grammar school education. The book continues to be widely read by former pupils and local residents, preserving memories of a much‑loved institution. David’s debut novel, The Sellingate Grammar Mystery, draws on his memories of school life, blending atmosphere, suspense, and human drama. Set in a fictional Kent grammar school, it explores hidden stories, quiet tensions, and the personal loyalties that shape pupils and staff. The novel is the first in a planned trilogy following its central character, Peter Elwood, as he uncovers further mysteries linked to Sellingate’s past. David lives in Ramsgate with his wife, Elizabeth, and continues to pursue photography, historical research, and heritage projects.
