This is a story about the early European settlers in Charleston and the settlement’s creation. It profiles the early farmers and landowners, as well as the townspeople who arrived in the seventeenth century. The first European settler to arrive in Charleston was Charles Newman, who, in 1839, moved to Mount Charles to manage the South Australian Company’s sheep properties. He was honoured for this work when Mount Charles—later changed to Charleston—was named after him. In 1843, Charles Newman bought his first property in Charleston. At the same land sale, William Dunn and Elizabeth Heard—and their daughter Mary—purchased an adjoining property. Charles Dunn and Mary Jasper moved to Charleston in 1845. Charles Dunn’s most significant land acquisition was in 1851, when he subdivided some of it for the Charleston Township and began selling allotments in late 1854. Notable about Charleston’s European settlers is the harmonious mix of British and German immigrants. The author is a descendant of William Dunn and Elizabeth Heard, Charles Newman and Mary Dunn, and Friedrich Wilhelm Rohrlach and Maria Bertha Paech.
