The spectator selects three cards from a regular deck. You give him three envelopes, numbered 1, 2 and 3. The spectator puts a card in each envelope. You then show him that you too have three envelopes, likewise numbered 1, 2 and 3. You suggest that you open the three envelopes simultaneously, starting with envelope 1. The envelopes which are numbered 1 are opened. They contain the same card, the 5 of Hearts. The envelopes which are numbered 2 are opened: both contain the 9 of Diamonds. You finally open envelope 3 – again the same card is found in both envelopes: the Queen of Spades. You can use any decks of cards, like an old deck which isn’t smooth anymore and another one which is incomplete.
