Society today has changed in so many ways that unexpected violence and tragedy happens all too often and typically involves the assault and undeserved death of children. From murder suicides by a disgruntled parent to physical and sexual abuse by baby sitters, teachers, coaches, religious and mass murders by a deranged loner like Newtown, Connecticut. These events have become a fixture which awaits us when we turn on our daily news. Add to that natural disasters, unusual weather patterns and the rash of terrorists attacks and you have a recipe for a very stressful life for parents and children alike. While adults have developed coping remedies over the years, some healthy and some not so healthy, children have few innate options they can recognize or draw from, especially the very young. This is where parents or committed adults (must) play a vital role in helping children who have experienced atrocities or have first-hand knowledge of mortal or traumatic events. Strong parents who suffer loss are better prepared to counsel other parents who suffer from similar loss. Some people seem to have the strength and inner fortitude to pick themselves up, take their eyes off themselves and continue to march forward with their lives with the ability to carry others on their backs. While these people may be the exception instead of the rule, there will always be those who can work through the pain and make good things happen for themselves and others. We believe this guide will provide useful tips and usable techniques that caregivers from all backgrounds will find doable and effective.
