This book is not a work of scholarship. There is no genealogy here, nor the history of individuals, or attribution to carvers, or the evolution of styles. This is a book of photographs that depicts the artistry of gravestone carvers in early New England. Only a location has been provided for each stone, but I hope it serves as a primer for viewers and piques their interest enough to go and seek out these works of art. Admission is free, and the settings are always peaceful and often charming in their own right. It is a worthy venture and will take you down paths never imagined. There is a wealth of information out there in the form of books and articles, and of course on the internet.
