Late in 1938, Philippe Armand Verdier, age 42, American volunteer aviator in the Air Arm of the International Brigades, arrived in Tolosa, a war torn small town in the Basque region of Spain near the south western French border. While filling his canteens from a wrecked fountain, that he encounters Cecile Therese Aillaud, 25 year old young lady who survived the bombing but is left with death threatening wounds. Together for just brief moments at a hospital, a spark of affection ignites into a developing love between the two strangers. But Cecile is to undergo surgery and Philippe is told he must leave the country immediately. Ten years pass and through the peculiarities of chance, they again meet. By this time however, the young lady is no longer Cecile; she is now a nun - Sister Marie! And now fate, the master puppeteer is manipulating their emotions and fortunes into a sequence of events that triggers many days of futility and conflict as they try to realize their love.
