I am pleased to have produced the first Organ Symphony by an African composer. This work is a major contribution to the few, but, rare organ literature in Africa. The Nigerian Organ Symphony is influenced by the compositional techniques of 19th-century French organ symphonies, particularly, Louis Vierne and Charles-Marie Widor’s works. Even though the character, style, and registrations of the five movements of this work are influenced by French music; the Nigerian Organ Symphony is infused with distinct African music creative and performance procedures such as scales, ostinati, call-and-response, interlocking rhythms, dance nuances, folk melodies, bell patterns, drum patterns, foot stamping and hand clapping rhythms. The five pieces are suitable for various occasions within the church calendar, such as preludes and postludes, processions, weddings, concerts, communion, and other contemplative moments in worship.
