The dawn man's forehead was low, but not bestial, and when he bared his fangs at me I heard a rumbling growl emerge from the depths of his powerful chest. He raised up and flung a great spear at me without warning, but I deflected the heavy shaft with my sword. "Peace," I said.
But he charged yet again. In that instant, a bellowing roar seemed to shake the walls of the crater. We both turned our eyes toward the swamp.
"Mogg!" my attacker shrieked in wild terror.
He sprang to his feet and ran for his life; and I was close upon his heels.
In our wake wallowed, walked, slithered, and crawled the monster, which would have caused all the dragons of the ages to hide, whimpering, in their secret lairs!
