In the waterways of New Orleans, some things refuse to stay dead. When Guapoté, a teenage fry cook scraping by in the Ninth Ward, pulls a mysterious fish from a Louisiana canal and eats it, he gets more than a meal. The fish's soul takes up residence inside him — and with it come scales, webbed toes, gill pores, and nightmares that blur the line between boy and river monster.
