For my work with civic architecture, I started with education because it is the system that touches almost every family, every day. It shapes judgement, belonging, and capability long before people enter civic life. If you want communities that contribute, question, and build, you start where identity forms.
I believe that teaching feels heavy for reasons that effort does not fix. This is the last book from me on Education, for the near future, names why.
- It is not about bad teaching.
- it is not about behaviour.
- It is not about teachers needing to try harder.
It follows real school days and shows what actually breaks learning.
- Lessons start late
- Work does not finish
- Interruptions fragment attention
- Support systems pull learning apart
- Effort rises. Outcomes do not
Across teachers, leaders, SEND, and pastoral roles, the same causes repeat and the same effects follow.
The book does not offer strategies. It does not sell reform. It does not ask you to add more. But it does help to notice what keeps causing the same effect.
Making Teaching Lighter for Better Learning is free to use, share, and adapt. If teaching feels heavy, this may help you understand why.
