How can you write a novel without words? Easily. You establish a narrative arc through a thematic progression of related images with the titles for the individual collage art as guides. Using this technique is exactly what Shores does in Some Lost Worlds. The result is a fantastical journey through a world that resembles ours, with domestic detailing, an overlay of popular culture imagery and the threat of weapons of mass destruction. The thesis is, while we engage in our everyday realities, strange and as mundane as they often are, larger forces beyond our control are undermining our world and threatening to reduce us to cinders and ash. The result of such disastrous political maneuvering could very easily become a desert of nothingness with relics of lost civilizations, one of which may well be ours.
