The legend of Buck Jones (Charles Frederick Gebhart 1891-1942) is unique. He was a popular movie cowboy star through parts of four decades, and yet his career was only beginning when he died in a fire at the young age of 50. He had worked as a real cowboy before ever thinking of making his first movie in 1918, and by 1925 had over 160 films under his belt, many as the starring role. Through peaks and valleys Buck Jones continued in films until his untimely death – and it's interesting to think what might have happened if he had stayed around for a while longer through the peak of cowboy popularity in the 40s and 50s – he might have been the most famous cowboy star of all time.
