Miriam Ruth (Mary) Weisman, an idealistic artist from New Haven, Connecticut visits a yoga ashram called The Center for a long weekend to quell her anxiety and ends up staying a year. As she becomes a disciple of the guru and attempts to embrace The Center's challenging spiritual practices--vegetarianism, work as service, and most unexpected, celibacy, she ends up learning more about herself than she bargained for.
