Albert Smith came from a large family as had own father. Albert and his wife Phyllis went on to have seven children. Albert was not special because of the number of siblings he had, nor was it that his life, also like many others, was linked with some of the most pivotal military campaigns of the 19th and 20th Century. Albert was special because he was an ordinary man who put country before everything else and fought alongside some of the greatest men in history at some of the bloodiest battles.
This is a story told by Albert, from his own diary kept for over forty years. It’s also a story that brings together the words of Lord Kitchener, Winston Churchill, William McGonagall and many others. Together these men, who surely never met Albert, shared many experiences with him that shaped their lives forever.
