The Beach House

Caroline Mallory, aging, widowed, facing the prospect of illness and decline, retreats for a few defiant days to an island off the Alabama coast. Her island house holds her memories, though both the house and the world around it have changed with time. Though she has intended to spend these days alone, her neighbor in the next house intrudes on her solitude. Like Caroline, Joe Keough has come seeking a respite in the sun from the hardships of old age. Can a chance meeting, in a place where nothing is permanent, offer a cure for loneliness? Is it better to walk alone through the valley of the shadow of death, or to walk in the company of a stranger?
