Linda/Li Lin is a speculative story about Linda McIntire, an American teenager growing up in Minnesota in the 1960s who transforms into Li Lin, a wealthy young Chinese woman. However, it is not the 1960s, but the 1940s and civil war is raging between Chiang Kai-shek's nationalists and Mao Zedong's Communists. Her father, a corrupt businessman, supports the Kuomintang and arranges her marriage to a Kuomintang officer.
Linda's notions of individualism and emerging feminist values conflict with Li Lin's conceptions of filial piety.
As the communists succeed in taking over China, events upset Li Lin's world, destroying her dreams. So, the young woman sets herself on a course of self-preservation and revenge.
