It is almost a magical phrase in the comics world: “Pre-Code Horror.” Before the dreaded Senate investigation and Comics Code Authority, the creativity of horror writers and illustrators was free of the shackles of censorship. Some of the best work came from the smaller publishers, like Story Comics. The 25 issue series ended just as the CCA was digging its nails into the flesh of horror freedom – not likely a coincidence (one of its issues was even used as “evidence” of the dangers of comics). MYSTERIOUS ADVENTURES contains great stories, excellent illustrations, some of the best use of color in horror/mystery comics, and pushed the envelope for propriety and so-called good taste.
