We are often told that the problem facing American culture today is an excess of ideology. This novel is an attempt to demonstrate that for most of us, the opposite is true. A working class man, struggling to move up one rung on the socio-economic ladder, finds that it is a deficiency of meaningful social practices that keeps him where he is.
