When Tom Swift was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, he told his daughters he planned to live as well as he could as long as he could. He had been writing columns for the Asheville (N.C.) Citizen-Times newspaper about his work as a hospice chaplain when his struggle with the disease became the subject of his writing. This book is a selection of those columns, detailing the lessons he has learned during the first two and a half years of his illness. The lessons are about dying, but more importantly, they are about living and loving.
