Fitting in and feeling confident in yourself can be difficult when you’re still growing up and discovering who you are. This rings especially true for children who get the feeling that something about themselves makes them a little bit different than the other kids in school. “Be True to You“ is an anthology of short, illustrated children’s stories that address topics related to identity and self esteem in elementary school-aged kids. We, the authors, are all graduating students at California State University Channel Islands who felt that this was a crucial theme to discuss in stories for young children, and thus selected it as the focal point for one of our senior projects. Our goal was to create a fun group of stories filled with colorful art that would help children not only learn to understand and accept themselves for who they are, but the kids around them who are different in other ways, too.
