John Gilmore was born in Montreal. An author, translator, jazz historian, and former journalist and editor, he has lived and worked across Canada and in the UK and Europe. His first book Swinging in Paradise is a lively, readable social history of Montreal's jazz community from the ragtime era to 1970. The book is also available in French, titled: Une histoire du jazz à Montréal. A companion reference book, Who's Who of Jazz in Montreal: Ragtime to 1970 is currently out of print, but will be reissued here. Gilmore has also published a hybrid novel, The Broken Notebooks; a poetic novel, Head of a Man, and a translation of Quebec film-maker Bernard Émond's novel, 8:17 pm, rue Darling. //// John Gilmore est né à Montréal.
