A small number of residences dominated the nineteenth century landscape of Kilgarvan in county Kerry and a number survived the Civil War. Notable was the family of McCarthy Mor whose properties included Kilfadda More, Slaheny House, Glenview Cottage and Sunville. Mary Frances McCarthy attained literary notice when she published a volume of poetry, Scraps from the Mountains under her pen-name, Christabel. She married Washington Downing and both the McCarthy and Downing families played important roles in the politics of 1848. Orpen family history is attached to the residences of Ardtully, Cloontoo (or Clontough), Woodville (or Cranberry House), Sillahertane and Bridgeville Park, all documented in this illustrated sketch.
