New York City, September 11, 2001.
On the last day of his life, Danny Eagleman took the M train from his apartment in Brooklyn Heights to Broad Street in Lower Manhattan. The young man from Dayton, Ohio knew the Lexington Avenue line would take him to Wall Street, closer his destination, but in fine weather he preferred to ride the Broadway line. He enjoyed the short walk from Broad Street along the man-made canyons of the financial district to the World Trade Center. Danny Eagleman was a realist by nature, but in moments of doubt his emotions tended to get the better of him and, to his surprise, the local area weather people had got it right. Danny Eagleman felt a little silly for doubting the weather people. Nevertheless, he had gone to the trouble of slipping a compact tote umbrella into the leather bag slung over his shoulder. The weather people had been wrong before, he reasoned, and besides the day was long and unpredictable.
