Albert Jay Nock was an American author, editor first of The Nation and then The Freeman, educational theorist, Georgist, and social critic of the early and middle 20th century. His biography Jefferson (1926) is regarded by scholars as among the finest ever written, providing special insight into the world of eighteenth century America. This centennial edition is the first fully new edition since its publication, and it features a new introduction by Jefferson scholar Kevin Gutzman, professor of history at Western Connecticut State University.
Albert Jay Nock’s Jefferson is an idiosyncratic account of the American Founder’s life by a highly learned author. Nock saw Jefferson as a kindred spirit, and his account of him reflects that evaluation: Nock is prone to putting Jefferson in a kind light, taking his subject at his word or indulging him when he errs. For all that, however, Nock gives his reader considerable insight into his subject, whom the reader is apt to understand considerably better—if he is an expert, markedly differently—upon completing the book than he did before.
This fully indexed volume revives this classic work to provide a detailed and warm look at this giant of history who deserves far more respect and admiration.
