Lefty Pappas, a child of immigrants, lives in the socially turbulent America of the 1960’s. He struggles with whether the wisdom of his ancestors is relevant in his life. He becomes an activist in many of the social issues of his day. Although from a stable and pious Christian family, Lefty feels an emotional and spiritual void in his life. He becomes a Peace Corp volunteer and travels to Kenya for two years where he begins a relationship with Irene, a quiet but committed Christian. Because of his rebellious and unsettling personality, Lefty becomes intrigued with the teachings of Buddhism. An articulate and caring Orthodox Christian priest helps the couple to grow as committed and informed Christians, leading them through the process and preparation of marriage. The overall theme of the novel is witnessing Lefty’s growing attraction to the peace of Christ, ultimately ending his rebellious and tumultuous inner struggle.
