Colum O’Connor, is seventeen in September of 1941. He is an aspiring artist and wants nothing more than to leave his small town, Brookfield, Connecticut, and its narrow-minded people. His twin brother, Harry, past away last year and he now longs to become a different person. But when his younger brother, Griffin (a chronic trouble-maker with a horrible reputation), comes home from boarding school, he feels nothing but contempt. He believes his brother is out to ravage his life and he must find some way of stopping him. His girlfriend (and English teacher), Mittie, ignores the crisis, but he feels convinced he must do something. As time progresses, Colum takes a journey into Griffin’s soul and begins to see that he is really a good kid with a kind heart, but has a lot of teenage angst.
