"Vacua" is a sculptural project that emerges from research centered around the complex and elusive nature of space itself, and embraces the problem of understanding the pervasive, apparently empty space that lies in-between all scales of matter. This thesis text accompanies "Vacua", and situates my art practice among a variety of disciplines interested in similar inquiries, drawing upon a wide range of theories from the fields of geography, philosophy, physics, and cosmology. Throughout this book, I examine the liminal relationship between absence and presence in the seemingly empty void space, the co-implicated relationship of interior and exterior in architectural and topological space, and the dynamic space time relationship manifest in tidal phenomena.
VAC·U·A Plural of vacuum. An empty space, seemingly absent of matter; a void.
