Then She Was Gone
An Original Psychological Mystery Novella
Chapter 1: The Empty Morning
The town of Ashwood awoke under a thick blanket of silver fog that muted the world around it. It was the kind of morning that absorbed all sound, creating an eerie stillness. Cars glided silently down the narrow streets, and the chirping of birds was absent as they remained hidden among the branches of the trees. Even the church bell, which usually rang clearly through the air, seemed to echo from a great distance, as if it belonged to another realm altogether.
Emma Hart stood at her kitchen window, clutching a cup of coffee that had long since gone cold, forgotten in her hands. Her daughter, Sophie, should have been downstairs by this time, as was customary every morning. Typically, Sophie would rush down the stairs, voicing her complaints about school, grabbing a piece of toast, and leaving a path of chaos in her wake. However, today was different; an unsettling silence enveloped the house, amplifying Emma's growing concern.
