James MacReady is very boring- or rather, he was, until he came to London in the late 1700s to write a novel and unwittingly adopted a little girl who has been kidnapped by pirates. Now he must go and rescue her from the cunning and irritatingly smarmy Foulweather Jim while winning the love of a mermaid he- er, happens to take hostage along the way and learning what exactly makes an intereting story (or how practicality isn't the answer to everything).
