Dr. John H. Watson, injured in Afghanistan, returns to London and meets the eccentric Sherlock Holmes, who works in a chemical laboratory of a hospital, and is willing to share a rented apartment with him on Baker Street. Later, Holmes reveals that he is a private detective, and asks to accompany him on the investigation of a bizarre murder in Lauriston Garden, on March 4th, 1881.
Quickly, Sherlock Holmes concludes that the deceased (Enoch Drebber) was poisoned and the blood in the place and that of a message on the wall ('RACHE') are from the murderer. He is surprised because a woman's wedding ring appears, and the detective deduces that this is a very valuable object for the murderer. He and Watson visit the policeman, who found the corpse, discovering a serious mistake of this officer. Knowing that the murderer will search for the ring, Holmes sets a trap for him, without succeeding.
