A ship, as insidious as a shadow on the River Styx, materializes from the darkness of the Choptank River. Its volatile cargo of decomposing corpses had succumbed to virulent strains of bacteria and viruses within the last 24 hours. The bodies have been obtained by a private research institute created to isolate and protect a team while they attempt to develop a new defense against common infections.
The book graphically demonstrates what will happen when antibiotics cease to work. The rich natural background of the Chesapeake Bay and the ingenious methods necessary to solve the problem are portrayed. The story demonstrates the futility of jealousy and mistrust between people of different backgrounds. The characters learn that no one is truly independent.
