Joss is mostly fiction written for adolescents and parents. The story shows the doubts, and causes of the lack of understanding, which exists between race – black and white. Sarah, the illiterate owner of a long boat/barge is an invaluable source of common sense and clear thinking – very dependable and very positive. Policewoman Silk is an idealist, compassionate and caring. Old Bowler – Deputy Head of the Secondary School sees all, hears all and says in direct terms, “We are talking about jealousy, fear, pride, and all that involves. Truth is what you see.” Joe – a young lady predictably involved in Joss’ future.
