The spectator selects three cards from a regular deck. You give him three envelopes, numbered 1, 2 and 3. The spectator puts a card in each envelope. You then show him that you too have three envelopes, likewise numbered 1, 2 and 3. You suggest that you open the three envelopes simultaneously, starting with envelope 1. The envelopes which are numbered 1 are opened. They contain the same card, the 5 of Hearts. The envelopes which are numbered 2 are opened: both contain the 9 of Diamonds. You finally open envelope 3 – again the same card is found in both envelopes: the Queen of Spades.

This trick can be done with just two decks of cards and six envelopes. You can use any decks of cards, like an old deck which isn’t smooth anymore and another one which is incomplete.
