Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and humanitarian who became a global symbol of peace and reconciliation. Born on July 18, 1918, in the rural village of Mvezo in the Eastern Cape, he was a member of the Thembu royal family. He studied law at the University of Fort Hare and later at the University of Witwatersrand, where he became involved in the anti-colonial and African nationalist movement. In 1944, Mandela joined the African National Congress (ANC), and in 1961 he co-founded its armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe, in response to increasing repression by the apartheid government. In 1962, he was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment for sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the state. He spent 27 years in prison, mostly on Robben Island, where his resolve never wavered. Mandela became a unifying figure during the turbulent years of negotiation in the early 1990s, helping to prevent civil war and guiding South Africa toward a peaceful transition to democracy. He was released from prison in 1990 and led negotiations that culminated in the first multiracial elections in 1994. Mandela became South Africa’s first black president from 1994 to 1999, focusing on national reconciliation, building a new constitution, and creating the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. He also worked to reduce poverty and inequality, though he faced major challenges. In 1993, Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize alongside F. W. de Klerk for their efforts in dismantling apartheid. After retiring from politics, he remained active in advocating for peace, human rights, and the fight against HIV/AIDS. Mandela passed away on December 5, 2013, at the age of 95. His legacy continues to inspire movements for justice and equality across the globe.
