Written more than 20 years ago and regarded by many publishers as too hot to handle, `How to be an Atheist` is thoughtful, easy to read, and wickedly entertaining. What did this author have to say, in a book that pre-dates Dawkins and Hitchens by more than two decades, and made publishers shudder? Well, as they say, `Now it can be sold`!
Brian confronts those who, he says, have `fallen into a trap` - Christians and other Believers - wishing, as did Feuerbach, that they were `friends of Man rather than friends of God`.
Brian suggests that we throw out the New Testament parables and the miracles of Jesus – a `misguided young Jew` - as both confusing and irrelevant. He also recommends the publication of an `Honest` Old Testament, with a critical glossary alongside every page.
There is also a piercing chapter on Sex and Sin guaranteed to make your eyes water.
`If God wants me,` Brian told himself as a young student, `he can bloody-well come and get me.` God still hasn`t, despite those wicked cartoons!
