Winning Model UN

Model United Nations Strategy, Speeches, Negotiation, and Resolution Writing

ByBrian Thomas

Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
Most first-time delegates walk into a Model UN committee room with no idea what happens next. Then someone motions for an unmoderated caucus, eighty people stand up at once, and the weekend gets decided in the fifteen minutes that follow. This book is about that room. It explains what the United Nations can and cannot do, and why that matters at nine at night when your bloc is writing a resolution. How to research a country you'd have to find on a map — and why drawing a small one is often an advantage. What a moderated caucus is, what a point of order is for, and which of the dozen or so motions a beginner will use. How to deliver a ninety-second speech when your hands are shaking. How blocs form, how competing documents get merged, and how awards are decided by two tired chairs with a legal pad. Thirty-five chapters, plus six appendices built to be carried into a committee room and used there: a glossary, an annotated position paper, an annotated draft resolution, a quick-reference table of every motion and point with the vote each requires, a phrase bank for writing clauses, and checklists for research, packing, and the night before. Written for students aged 13 to 17 who have never attended a conference, and for the teachers and club officers responsible for getting them ready. It assumes no background in debate, civics, or foreign policy. It also says plainly where the activity is expensive, where it rewards confidence over preparation, and what a delegate can do about either. Procedure is covered for the American circuit, with a chapter on THIMUN and other formats, and a standing reminder that a conference's own rules document overrides everything else. No illustrations.
