Tony Federer was born in Manhattan on January 19, 1939, grew up in a Boston suburb, lived 40 years in New Hampshire, and now resides in a Maine retirement community. He summarizes his life as “one job, one boss, one wife”. As a hydrometeorologist with the U.S. Forest Service and the famous Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study he produced a computer model of forest hydrology that is used around the world. A lifelong Unitarian Universalist and scientific pantheist, he has written a book about ecocentrism, deep ecology, and environmental issues. He and Suzanne, his wife of 65 years, have two children and four grandchildren. Two of these offspring have been on the U.S. National Orienteering Team, and Tony has been national orienteering champion in his age class many times. He is the fifth person to have hiked all the trails in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, is a lifelong birder with 935 species on his life list, has knit 150 pairs of socks on an antique circular sock machine, has written genealogical histories about hundreds of his and his wife’s ancestors, and reached his “second career” goal as a librarian.
How did all this (and more) happen? Tony’s multi-faceted and well-illustrated autobiography, Threads From My Tapestry, chronicles the early influences of family, school, and travel, his career and family life, and his wide variety of interests, ending with introspective chapters on his spirituality, personality, and marriage. Though written primarily for relatives and friends, the book also provides a cultural narrative of how life in America has changed over the 87 years of his existence.
