The Great Kiskadee

The Story of the Yellow-Bellied Shrike of Cayenne and its journey to the Isle of Bermuda

ByClaudio Guerrieri

Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
This is the story of the yellow-bellied flycatcher, the Great Kiskadee (Pitangus sulphuratus), which had been first described in 1648 in Dutch-Brazil. This New World bird was brought from its native Trinidad to Bermuda for a last-ditch attempt to save the island’s oleander and cedar trees. The tactic eventually proved to be ineffective, but the Great Kiskadee thrived in Bermuda and has become a distinctive feature of the island.
