In 1978, sixteen-year-old Clive Dutton was a Deck Boy aboard the huge cargo ship MV Lackenby, returning to Britain fully laden with iron ore when the crew received terrifying news: they were heading straight into a hurricane. At first, Clive doesn't understand what lies ahead. But as the storm builds, the ship is battered by enormous waves, violent winds, and huge hailstones. The sea rises like a mountain range, washing over the ship as the fully laden Lackenby plunges into deep valleys and then struggles back up the towering waves. Determined to see the storm for himself, Clive makes his way to the bridge, holding tightly to the railings as the ship is thrown about. What he sees through the bridge windows changes everything. Fear takes over, and in the middle of the terrifying storm, Clive begins to pray and makes a promise to God: if he survives, he will change his life. Back in his cabin, wearing two life jackets and preparing for the possibility of abandoning ship, Clive faces a night he will never forget. The Storm on the MV Lackenby is a true story of fear, courage, faith and survival at sea—and of a sixteen-year-old boy who discovered just how powerful the ocean could be.
