Gallipoli was to have been the second front during world war one. The idea was to “attack in the soft underbelly of Europe”. The Turkish had other ideas. They were ready. The attack was pinned down to the beaches by heavy gunfire. Beeston presents his own personal account of this period while serving in the Commonwealth forces Anzac field ambulance division. . He describes the horrors of the period, but he also described vividly the unique camaraderie between men under these circumstances. Even in almost certain death there is a grime humour that can make living worthwhile.
